What I hear about Baker Mayfield and the Browns – Terry Pluto

BEREA, Ohio – Did not come close to an agreement.

This is what I heard from a top NFL source about Browns and Carolina business negotiations over QB Baker Mayfield that crashed Friday.

Brown is in a difficult position. The whole NFL knows they want to lose Mayfield after selling Deshaun Watson. Despite Browns owner Jimmy Haslam refusing, many NFL owners are outraged by the guaranteed $ 230 million deal he offered to Watson.

Consider what Baltimore Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti said at the NFL Owners Meetings: “I wish he had not confirmed the whole deal. I don’t know if he would have been the first to have a guaranteed contract.

Bisciotti is disappointed that his QB Lamar Jackson is heading to the end of his contract. Jackson is over and should use Watson’s contract as a starting point for his negotiations – and ask for more.

Watson took office last season as he continues to address 22 cases of women hanging him. It’s a three-time Pro Bowler, but he hasn’t gone to the Super Bowl. How did this man manage to make history? At the very least, that is the attitude of many in the NFL.

Not that the deal includes $ 80 million more guaranteed than anyone else in NFL history, about $ 46 million a year. It’s a little higher than Kansas City QB’s $ 45 million annual salary for Patrick Mahomes. The only QB with the highest pay is Aaron Rodgers at $ 50 million.

You can imagine some great QB sponsors using Watson to seek new deals for their clients. No NFL owner can say what the Browns did was wise for the NFL – they have found ways to avoid the definite contracts found in other games.

Remember, it is not about saving billions of dollars. It’s about managing your paycheck.

WHAT DOES THIS DO WITH MAYFIELD?

The owners of the NFL are a club. Sometimes they treat each other well in practice. In some cases, it can be difficult for groups / owners who do not like them.

When Mr. Brown spoke to Carolina, the biggest problem was Mayfield’s $ 18.9 million paycheck. The Panthers have a place on their pay to take him. They have a QB need, as Sam Darnold is their first. Selected in the same 2018 tournament as Mayfield, Darnold started 11 games in 2021. The Panthers were 4-7. He threw a 9 TD pass compared to 13 interceptions. He has been very disruptive in his NFL career.

Mayfield should be a great addition. Mr. Brown is willing to pay some of their bills. But Carolina wanted more money. There were rumors of a sell-off, but the Panthers believe the Browns have almost zero power.

Carolina cut off the interview and took Mississippi QB Matt Corral in third place. The word from Carolina is that the negotiations are dead. Yes, they can. But this seems impossible, especially so far.

AND BAKER SPOKE

Mayfield wants to leave Cleveland. He hurt himself in an interview with the YNK podcast hosted by “Mike.” The subject was how Mayfield felt “disrespectful” when Brown fired Watson and did not tell him at first.

But he also mentioned things that would not please future employers.

“It’s a big fight inside the locker room where I sit as a quarterback,” he said. “Some of these guys don’t play because they like it. They are playing to find a retirement fund. She’s making $ 1 million and not having a successful career. ”

Maybe Mayfield is right about this, but is it time to call your friends? Remember, it’s still Brown’s. Also, make a list of names if you want to become a regular person. Not to mention this on the podcast with rapper Mike.

“How can I get the best out of people who make a lot of money?” said Mayfield. “I can always encourage people when we are not earning money. … You receive a pension after four years, how do you encourage people who are already at that time? “

Hey Baker, that is part of your job as an NFL QB.

If you are running Panthers or another team, what do you say about that? Mayfield’s advisers should have told him not to say anything – at least until he sold out. Maybe they did, and maybe he didn’t listen. Either way, bad move.

Mayfield has been around as a baby in the past, and this is an exacerbation of that bad fire.

NOW WHAT?

I hear their plan and wait, maybe the team will lose QB due to injuries in training camps. He is not planning to release Mayfield and let him choose his team. Nor should he. Even if he has to pay more for his salary, it is better to wait for some kind of contract to appear.

It’s hard to believe that Seattle fail to see Mayfield as a better bet on QB than Drew Lock or Geno Smith.

But for now, Mr. Brown is nowhere near Mayfield. He lives, a quarterback without a team. It may take some time for this to change.
