In a special interview, with Ryan Day, Harry Miller talks about leaving Buckeye’s dream to save his life.
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Harry Miller came to Ohio State as a major player to join the gymnasium.
As a newcomer, the footballer arrived at the team reserve playing 13 of 14 games.
Having started seven games in the 2020 short season, Miller is expected to be the starting point for the Buckeyes in the fall.
But a native of Georgia was listed on the team’s list that was not available for a long time.
While the list may imply that a player is not on the team for a number of reasons from illness to injury, no one knew what was keeping Miller from entering the club.
“I saw all this time people were raising questions or fantasies, which were irritating in one way and unfair,” Miller said.
Earlier this year, Miller shared the news that he was leaving football and shared a powerful message for a reason: He was giving up his dream to save his life.
“Before the season last year, I told Coach [Ryan] The day he attempted suicide, “Miller wrote.
Miller discussed his mental problems and how he tries to keep playing despite having scars on his body.
He wrote: “It is hard to see, and it is easy to hide, but it is very painful. “There was a dead man on TV, but no one knew.”
In an interview with 10TV’s Dom Tiberi, Miller said he had a history of good health and had an attitude that often threatened or harmed many people.
“That was all I could think of,” she said. “I came to the point where I was extremely tired and realized how far I had come in this way but for me, I thought it was normal. to think so I just thought that’s the way it is. “
Before the season was over, Miller said he was in the wrong place.
“There is a lot of pressure ahead of the season. “There is a lot of stress around the competition and it was one of the stresses that is linked to a lot of other problems combined with a lot of other things that I have had that came to a climax,” he said.
This was Miller’s start and encouraged him to say something was wrong.
“It was saying something or really dying,” he said.
After speaking to Day, she said the teacher immediately connected with people and got the help she needed. During this time, he was working secretly through objects with sports psychologists in Ohio State.
“First of all Harry had to do the job, and it was not easy but to see what he was doing and the consequences at a very young age,” said Day.
The issue of mental health is personal today. When he was nine years old, his father died and committed suicide.
Since becoming head coach, Ohio State has added volunteers to help players with dementia.
Day said he has excellent doctors, psychiatrists and counselors for these things. He also said that for a long time he had been there but could not find the job.
“People did not want to do this work alone. And for me it is the magic of what happened, ”he said. “If you look at most of these young people we are losing, they do not reach that point and then try to say that it is better that you feel there is help.”
Day said Miller is getting to the point where he wants to help others.
“Harry is about to change his life to help people in this way. Saying there is no harm in asking for help at that time,” said Day. here. ‘”
Then, on March 10, Miller made an international announcement.
“We discussed the announcement, I did and it encouraged a number of things to follow up on the conversation and share my story with the people,” Miller said.
Miller said he was very grateful to see the response from the people.
“I am happy now to experience what I have experienced because it has prepared me with the words and understanding of how people feel when people say ‘I feel that way too’ to reach out to these people,” he said. he said.
“Harry has no obligation to anyone to tell his story and most of these things are confidential to him and he went there and did it and I have the courage,” Day said. “That’s the kind of people you want in your home every day.”
Discussing his history with Miller, Day recalled what he had written to him as an assistant to the Buckeyes.
“When you go through the recruitment process you build relationships. And you’re on a journey together you never know where these things are going, and we’re here and this is a great story,” he said.
Now, Miller is trying to do his best and bring about change for others including student athletes.
“No one can say anything, but that’s why someone has to say it because we can’t say anything, we’ve been doing it for a long time, and we can continue to cause the youth to die if that’s the case. They want it to happen,” he said.
She also noted that sometimes it is difficult to talk about her wounds.
“Sometimes I have to reopen them, which is painful, but regardless of the wounds, it should be effective,” he said.
Miller said he was happy to be in office.
“As human beings, we have a call to be kind to our neighbors and to speak to them to our loved ones and to strangers,” Miller said. it is said. “
As a footballer, Miller said you can feel overwhelmed by your future and your expectations, especially for other professional athletes.
“It’s a game, and we play like a game, but when you make a mistake you get death threats and that’s when people just make a game of life or death,” he said.
He adds that this is where the student athletes get the most out of it and it becomes more and more isolated and unusual.
“I remember feeling that way,” she said. “I don’t want to be here anymore, and I have to be in front of 100,000 people next weekend. How should this work?”
Miller shared his advice with people who do not know what to say or get out, talk to people who care about them.
“You may be surprised at how much grace people can give you,” he said.
