Covid: Children admitted to hospital – 06/14/2022 – Equilíbrio e Saúde
Hospitals have again recorded an increase in child visits and hospital admissions due to Covid-19. According to an unprecedented analysis by Infogrip-Fiocruz, a project that monitors SRG, excluding the population over the age of 60, has placed people between the ages of zero and five at the highest risk of being hospitalized for the disease. (Severe acute respiratory syndrome) in the country.
People up to the age of five are still unvaccinated against the disease. In November, this group did not represent 5% of the weekly cases of Srag by Kovid-19 in the country. Since April, he has registered up to 15%.
Another analysis by Info Tracker (a project of USP and UNESP) noted that four government children’s hospitals in Greater Sao Paulo had children admitted to the hospital due to covid (Candido Fontora, Menino Jesus, Darcy Vargas and Municipal Hospital for Children and Adolescents). Between June 1 and June 13 (60 to 69) increased 23%.
According to Wallace Casacar, coordinator of Info Tracker and a professor at UNESP in Brazil, since April, the incidence of hospitalization for children due to covid has increased, especially among those under the age of five. Between April and May, there was a 33% increase (461 to 612 hospital admissions). Country data for May and early June are still incomplete.
Hospital Pecueno Princip, the largest pediatric organization serving SUS in Brazil, noticed an increase in confirmed cases and hospital admissions for covid. As of Monday (13), there were an average of 5.38 confirmed cases per day, an increase of 26%, compared to 4.2 cases in May.
Considering five-year-olds, growth is even higher. There are 3.3 cases per day as against 2.2 in May, an increase of 50%. The confirmation rate for the Covid test has increased from 12% in May to 20% in early June. The number of hospital admissions more than tripled between April and May between 9 and 30. This Monday (13), 18 children were hospitalized.
According to Marcelo Gomes, co-ordinator of the InfoGrip Bulletin, this increase in covid among young children is largely a result of the abandonment of protective measures, such as the use of masks in closed spaces by adults.
“About them, we all care. As I facilitate the transmission of the virus, I pave the way for children who are unable to protect themselves. They need our action, so that we can be vigilant.”
Wallace Casaka of Info Tracker also points to the high number of hospital admissions for covid among babies between the ages of zero and 11 months. Between April and May, they jumped from 199 to 285.
Over the past four weeks, Sabara Hospital Infantile has seen the number of confirmed cases of covid in the emergency room go up from 21 to 129. At the same time, the number of hospital admissions has increased from three to nine. This Monday (13), there were 13 children hospitalized.
“The percentage of positivity [para Covid] Growing since the end of April. It was 1%, it increased in May and, last week, 21% of all Covid tests came back positive, “said Francisco Ivanildo Ribeiro, Sabara’s quality manager.
According to him, most children do not need hospitalization. Generally, only those who have risk factors, such as chronic diseases, genetic and neurological changes, go to the ICU.
For Ribeiro, it is important to include Covid in immunizations, even though the effects of Covid are much less on young children than at other ages. “They can act as a reservoir of the virus and transmit it. This is a group that, from a numerical point of view, is not insignificant. 9% of our population is under five years old.”
Also, doctors point to the low coverage of vaccination against covid in the lower age group of 5 to 11 years, for which the vaccine has already been released since the beginning of the year. Today, more than 30% of children of this age have both doses of the vaccine.
A systematic review found that more than 25% of children and adolescents infected with the coronavirus may develop long-term covid-19, meaning that they continue to show one or more symptoms more than a month after infection. The study was conducted by universities in the United States, Mexico and Sweden.
At least eight countries have already vaccinated children under the age of five against Kovid using the Soberana 02 vaccine from Cinopharm Laboratory and Coronavac, which is under analysis by Anvisa for application to three-year-olds in Brazil.
In the United States, the FDA is studying the release of both Pfizer (three doses) and Modern (two doses) vaccines.
