The risk of a Children or adolescents who have not been vaccinated against Covid-19 After developing pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome (P-SIM), the disease occurs in about 200 cases per million.
According to a study published in Scientific Journal, if they are vaccinated with at least one dose, the risk is reduced to one case per million. The Lancet Child and Adolescent Health – which makes the condition a rare occurrence among vaccinators.

English researchers first described in April 2020, Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome associated with Covid-19 Infection by Sars-Cov-2 affects different parts of the body, a period that can vary from four to eight weeks after infection.
According to Marcio CA Morera, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, it is believed to be an exaggerated and cascading immune response, with the main symptoms being:
• Endless fever (not necessarily high, but it does not go away);
Rash;
Cardiac and coagulation changes;
Gastrointestinal conditions such as diarrhea, abdominal pain and nausea.
“It’s a very serious condition, often life-threatening, requiring hospitalization and constant monitoring. This is not a simple diagnosis and what we notice is that previous infections with coronavirus act as a trigger “, Morera explains.
One in a million
Regarding the prevalence, U.S. researchers who conducted the study analyzed vaccination data on children and adolescents aged 12 to 20 in the United States during the first eight months of vaccination (between December 2020 and August 2021).
Everyone has received the vaccine invented by the pharmaceutical Pfizer / BioNTech, the only one approved in the country for children under 18 years of age.
Data from more than 20 million vaccinated youth were analyzed. Of these, 47 suspected cases of the syndrome were identified. In addition, 21 of them met the criteria for confirmation of pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome.
The researchers further assessed whether children and adolescents had previously experienced Covid-19 with the symptoms of the syndrome: 15 of them, yes; 6, no.

Twenty-one people diagnosed with the condition were hospitalized, 12 had to be admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), but all were discharged.
Given the total number of people this age who have already received at least one dose of the vaccine, researchers have reached a risk rate for every one million vaccinators. Among vaccines that did not have Covid-19 before, the risk was even lower: 0.3 cases / million.
“This work reinforces the importance of immunization. Some people even argue that Covid-19 is slightly relevant in children, since most have mild symptoms, so there may be a serious manifestation of the infection in pediatricians, ”the infectious specialist highlighted.
Since Sim-P is another syndrome, similar to Kawasaki, according to Morera, the diagnosis can also be confusing. “They are very similar and the medical intervention is the same. In practice, there is no difference. The diagnostic criteria are clinical and the difference is based on the period of post-infection development, ”he thinks. “So I’m emphasizing: Vaccination of children and adolescents is very important. The risk of a vaccinated person getting the syndrome is very low, “he concluded.
